Before You Start Job Searching, Read This

When you’re unhappy at work, it’s so tempting to jump right into job search mode. Update the résumé, scroll job boards, imagine a fresh start. But without clarity, you can easily end up in the same situation, just with a different title.

Before you apply, take a step back and ask yourself a few simple questions.

What’s really not working?

Be honest. Is it the work, the people, the pace, or something else? The more specific you are, the easier it is to avoid repeating it.

What do I want more of?

Not just what you want to leave, but what you want to move toward. More flexibility, growth, impact, creativity? This is what helps you recognize the right opportunity.

What matters most right now?

Your priorities shift over time, and that’s okay. The “right” job today might look very different than it did a few years ago.

What fears are showing up?

Fear of change, failure, or starting over can quietly drive decisions. Notice it, but don’t let it take over.

What am I telling myself?

If your inner voice says “this is as good as it gets,” your job search will reflect that. Give yourself permission to think bigger.

How will I know it’s a good fit?

Know your non-negotiables. Otherwise, everything can look like a maybe.

The bottom line

Taking a little time to get clear doesn’t slow you down. It actually saves you from starting over again later.

You don’t need perfect answers. Just enough clarity to move forward with intention and confidence.
